Green Cleaning Tips

For the in between cleanups until our next visit, here are a few cleaners that are made with ordinary household products that you can put together yourself that save and stay green

o Deodorize Carpets - sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda on the carpets of a medium sized room.  Let sit for 30 minutes and vacuum away odors

o Glass Cleaner - mix ¼ cup of white vinegar with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray on glass and wipe clean with a lint free cloth or newspaper

o Mold and Mildew - wipe with undiluted vinegar or alternatively spray with an inexpensive vodka and let sit for several minutes

o Furniture Polish - can be made at home with 2 parts olive oil and 1 part lemon juice

o Disinfectant - 2 cups water, 3 tablespoons of liquid soap, and 20-30 drops of tea tree oil*** Alternative disinfectant- 2 teaspoons borax, 4 tablespoons of white vinegar, 3 cups hot water, 1 teaspoon liquid castile soap.  Used to wipe down countertops, toilets, sinks

o Bathroom - Mix a paste of baking soda and vinegar to remove stubborn toilet bowl rings.

o Windows - Rub windows down with a cotton-swab of rubbing alcohol to remove old cleaning product residue and wash with a mixture of two tablespoons vinegar and one-quart water.

o Wood - Polish wood with three parts olive oil and one part white vinegar.

o Floors - Use multi-purpose baking soda for scouring or to remove scuff-marks from vinyl floors. Add a small square of aluminum foil, boiling water, and it makes a great silver bath!
